  1. The Guardian article refers to tipping points in EV take-up. I think it correctly identifies that purchase price is a large factor. But there are other factors that are make-or-break it in many peoples’ decisions as to what car to get. It correctly identifies that technical progress is helping that tipping point approach, not just on price but on those other factors too. I’m not convinced things are yet as close as they suggest.

    It is currently common to cite the proportion of cars sold that are EVs as evidence of progress in this direction. It is less common to observe alongside that European manufacturers are now subject to rules that in effect force them to sell a higher proportion of EVs. So they price their various offerings accordingly to achieve that. And that car sales may not be representative in this pandemic year, when sales overall are hugely down.

    Meanwhile SUVs are ever more popular. There is clearly a substantial part of the population who value other things over being green. Perhaps the real tipping point comes when Jeremy Clarkson gets an EV.
