  1. The Taurus Express railway line was also used by some of the crew of the Emden to get from Cocos Island to Berlin in 1915

The Emden, a German light cruiser disguised as a freighter, was sunk off Cocos Island in November 1914

Some of the crew managed to get ashore, and commandeered a wooden sailing schooner, Ayesha, and sailed to Pedang, Indonesia

They had a Baedecker (or was it a Cooks ?) that said there was a train from Saudia Arabia to Berlin

So they got a lift to Yemen, and then walked and sailed several hundred miles up the Red Sea.

The Hejaz railway was supposed to reach Mecca, but in 1915 had only got as far as Medina.

At Medina they asked for 47 singles to Berlin, please.

They had to change trains in Constantinople, but were enthusiastically welcomed when they got to Berlin.
