  1. Noteworthy that although Otterington signal box was stripped on closure, the owner has made a replacement, as reported in the listing statement for the site. INTERIOR: the signal box contains a reinstalled LNER lever frame of 20 levers, the levers being appropriately badged for the display board set above. This display board has a copy of the original track and signalling layout for Otterington taken from the original plans held at the National Railway Museum.

  2. Ah, the Kingsway Tram tunnel.
Beloved of film & TV producers, everywhere, for a dramatic “set”.
I wonder how many of our readers & correspondents have actually been through it – on a Tram.
[ Yes, when I was 5, on the way to “The Festival of Britain”, in case you were asking. ]

  3. Missed it by a couple of months. My father took me on the last week of the trams in July 1952 – I still have the tickets – but the Kingsway subway had closed in the April, I think. My only memory – I was not quite three years old at the time – is of wooden slatted seats.

I think I was about 14 or 15 when I “did” the subway. A memorable journey!

  5. I am told I was taken on the last week of trams in London, but don’t remember it as i was only one at the time!
