We’ve updated the Out of Station Interchange List. It’s also now in PDF format, which should make it more accessible, and includes the ELL interchanges that will be relevant from when the line opens. The list can be found here. Thanks to TD for making the FOI request.
This week saw the East London Line reach an important milestone – its official handover from the Balfour Beatty Carillion Joint Venture to TfL which was completed yesterday. This means that the Line is now entering its final stages of development, focusing on the training and testing of both train and station staff and fixtures and fittings work. In terms of launch dates, the 23rd May has long been seen as the most likely “full” opening date as this coincides with the National ...
TfL have confirmed that the 3-year Blackwall Tunnel refurbishment programme will begin on the 7th of February. This will mean that the northbound tunnel will be closed between 21:00 and 05:00 from Sundays through to Fridays. Northbound traffic will be diverted through the southbound tunnel (with a 20mph speed limit in place) and Southbound traffic will need to use other Thames crossing options. The refurbishment largely revolves around safety and modernisation works – updated fire and ...
We’ve previously posted on the post-metronet oversight arrangements here. In a nutshell, the Joint Steering Committee appointed to evaluate post-Metronet options determined that Metronet’s responsibilities should stay with TfL. In return, however, TfL would be required to appoint a committee of independent figures to oversee the entire TfL investment programme. Members of this committee would come from a shortlist of nominees drawn up by the Mayor and TfL, with the final appointments ...
With snow dominating much of the transport-related headlines, it is easy to forget that London is now ten days into arguably the largest expansion of the Oyster ticketing system since it first launched. As a result, it is probably worth taking a quick look at what appears to be the situation so far. A Far-flung Infrastructure In infrastructure terms, the launch of Oyster PAYG on National Rail appears to have gone relatively smoothly. TfL indicate that overall they were satisfied with the ...
Network Rail have released an interesting Time-lapse video showing the new eastern section of bridge at Blackfriars being slid into place. The replaced bridge is at the north end of the station, immediately past the original end of the platforms, but would normally have been hidden behind the now demolished buildings on the corner of Queen Victoria St and Blackfriars bridge. The slide was originally planned to take place toward the end of November, but was delayed until Christmas when it was ...
T’is the New Year, and thus time for the quiz results. Our winners this year are AH, who wins first prize and PH who wins second. As with last year there were lots of good entries and thanks to everyone who entered. We hope you enjoyed answering the questions as much as we enjoyed setting them. I will be emailing the winners shortly to organise the dispatch of prizes. In the meantime, the answers were as follows (questions can be found on the original post here): 1) Ghost (The train ...
When the architecture of the Underground is discussed, it is nearly always to the work of Charles Holden that comment turns. The reasoning for this, of course, is obvious. In the likes of Gants Hill, Arnos Grove and 55 Broadway, Holden left an architectural legacy that few other 20th Century figures could match. Holden’s legacy, however, often serves to distract from the work of another young architect roughly ten years before him. A man who would arguably do more to define the public ...
