A new deal announced this week will pave the way for trials of innovative lightweight passenger trains that run entirely on battery power. The trains, known as Revolution Very Light Rail (RVLR) vehicles, are expected to carry passengers within three years and could significantly reduce emissions on Britain’s railways.
Eversholt Rail, a leading rolling stock owning company, has signed contracts with Transport Design International (TDI) to build three new pre-series RVLR vehicles for passenger trials. TDI will manufacture the new vehicles in the Midlands, with assembly commencing in 2024 and the first vehicle ready for passenger operation in 2026.
The RVLR’s modular design is said to enable a rapid production schedule, following on from successful trials and testing in Ironbridge over the past two years. These trials have provided valuable data that will inform wider deployment of RVLR vehicles.
