How gas station economics will change in the EV charging future (CNBC)

KEY POINTS

  • Gas station numbers have been decreasing at a sharp rate in the past three decades and the trend is expected to continue, with at least a quarter of service stations globally at risk of closure by 2035 without significant business model tweaks, according to consulting firm BCG.
  • Gas stations making the switch to electric vehicle charging will be investing in Level 3 chargers, which are the most powerful and generally charge in 20 to 30 minutes, but for multiple units can incur investment costs between $500,000 to $1 million.
  • Major oil companies are supporting franchise filling stations, including BP and Shell, and in the U.S. there are numerous federal, state and utility-based incentives for commercial businesses to purchase and install fast chargers.

As electric vehicles proliferate, some gas stations are making expensive overhauls to add EV charging stations.

  1. “While slower charging stations are often free to motorists”

Not in the UK they’re not! I know of a scant few free public EV chargers – and they have time limits which means you can only do a small top-up (e.g. 5%), not a meaningful charge.

In the UK, the biggest problem with public EV charging points is reliability. When planning a long distance drive, you have to factor in your first choice EV charging station not working.

  2. Gas stations globally have been closing for the last 3 decades with a quarter of those remaining at risk. In the UK there are many former sites either abandoned or in adapted use as car washes or sales outlets. With the lack of any plan to provide charging for a targeted widespread adoption of battery vehicles could that be a opportunity?
Recently a plan was put forward to demolish one of the earliest freeway service areas at Watford Gap to create space for 150 chargers with 6 being fast chargers. That does not sound too impressive until you consider currently there are 16 chargers southbound and only 7 chargers northbound.

  4. I’m also seeing a link to safeframe.googlesyndication.com in plain text, perhaps because it’s not being recognised as a hyperlink because there’s no space between the preceding text’s “…networks.” and the link’s “https://….”.

But judging from the original text it goes to an ad, so I suggest that it be deleted.
