Elephant & Castle Tube station upgrade prepares for tunnelling (NewCivilEng)

Construction of a new integrated ticket hall at Elephant & Castle station has been completed to basement level five while preparation for new passenger tunnels is underway.

The London Underground station currently has two separate entrances to access the Bakerloo and Northern lines, which is inconvenient for passengers. The new integrated ticket hall will replace the existing access to the Northern line as well as contain passive provision for a possible future extension to the Bakerloo line. Until the Bakerloo line is extended, the existing entrance to this line will remain.

Construction of the station structure is being carried out as part of a major mixed-use development by Elephant & Castle UK, a subsidiary of Get Living, which is funding its construction. The above ground complex will comprise a 34 storey residential tower wrapped at low level with a six storey commercial podium structure; 20 and 24 storey residential towers sharing a two storey commercial podium structure; a four storey office block; and a 12 storey building for the University of Arts London’s College of Communication.

Multiplex was awarded the £434M design and build contract in 2021, with Gardiner & Theobald the principal designer and WSP the structural engineer.

The development of the Elephant & Castle station has seen piling to form a box roughly 22m below ground through which the Bakerloo line tunnels will pass.

Piling for the box completed in 2022 with 325 secant piles and 26 contiguous piles with diameters up to 1,200mm installed at depths between 25m and 50m. There were also 57 bearing piles installed at depths between 17m and 43m.

This was then topped with six reinforced concrete transfer beams to form the box to house the Bakerloo line tunnels. The new ticket hall will be built above this.

  1. The new ticket hall appears to be above the current crossover in the Bakerloo overrun tunnels, although it will provide an escalator link to the Northern Line platforms which are not shown. If the ticket hall ever provides future access to the Bakerloo Line, it will be to a new tunnel alignment to Lewisham which will start back at Lambeth North, and is again not shown on this diagram.
