  1. Parking: Lack of parking spaces overnight is the main reason why car ownership is so low in some areas. For example, K&C has the lowest household car ownership in London despite being the wealthiest borough. EVs won’t change this problem so it’s unlikely to change car ownership much. Note that DfT traffic forecasts for London have always been wildly out (I think they are currently forecasting about a 40% increase in traffic) because they are driven by car ownership models which, in turn, are driven by household income. It will never happen.

  2. UK has had an unbalanced approach to motor cars from history – leadership support, post-war export recovery, tax benefit to support industry, road building programme, tax revenue.
    In last 20 years car numbers have increased 28% with 3/4s parked off street, more flats and paved over gardens.
    Policy emphasis has been on reducing usage rather than denying ownership.
    The 8 million on street parkers will be squeezed out by more electric charging provision. Already visible with the few new installations including fast food lots and local shops where spaces are abused. Increasing pressure on the remaining gardens to convert for space and charging including conservation areas.
    The pressure on home parking is paralleled with cost pressure on business parking provision making some commute and shopping trips less feasible.

    There are 2 wheel solutions to these challenges yet the UK stifles creative development and adoption, from not invented here to existing infrastructure or legislation to safety concerns against heavy traffic. We have gone from allowing the C5 to banning Pedelecs.
