  1. That “Hook of Holland” article brings back memories – & yes, the Hook – Warsaw ( Moscow ) express was there & old, battered but still functional CIWL cars ….

  2. A lot is made of the Pininfarina design, but the real challenge is to design the bogies that can adjust from 1000mm gauge to 1435mm. In addition the height of the vehicles has to rise to be compatible with the larger gauge vehicles. This adjustment is carried out when the train is moving – albeit at a comaratively slow speed. This has been a major technical challenge and has nothing to do with Pininfarina.

    Adjusting the gauge of trains is not unusual; it has been going on in Spain for many years so that high speed standard gauge trains can travel to destination only served by Iberian gauge tracks (1664mm). It’s adjusting both gauge and height in the much smaller space available on metre gauge vehicles that is the real innovation
