In Pictures: Crossrail at Whitechapel

Crossrail have released the first concept images of the revised design for Whitechapel Station.

Objections from Tower Hamlets over the station’s layout (notably the presence of the main entrance on Fulbourne Street) and local residents (over the disruption construction would cause) had forced a redesign on the station.

The new design, by BDP and Hyder Consulting, sees the main entrance move to Whitechapel Road. The ventilation shafts have also been reworked, with the Durwood Street shaft split into two and the Cambridge Heath Road shaft reduced in size. The station now also features an elongated walkway that links Durwood Street and Whitechapel Road. Crossrail have also indicated that this will be a “free access” route, suggesting that it will not be gated – something that will be welcomed by local residents.
