Tragedy and Turnaround: A History of St Johns Station – Part 2

29 April, 2013 by

Thumbnail

In part one we recalled the history of St Johns station up to World War II. In that time the the station had already been subject to more change than most stations have in their entire lifetime. After World War II though, it did seem that this had come to an end. The station, and the immediate surrounding area, had now remained largely unaltered, and uninteresting, since 1929 and there was no reason to believe that this would change in … Continued

Accidents and Islands: A History of St Johns Station – Part 1

25 April, 2013 by

Some railway stations are more worthy of a visit for their own sake than others. History, architecture, location, current operation and future plans, all contribute in their own way to give you a reason to explore a particular station. You wouldn’t think the small suburban commuter stop of St Johns was one of these, but in truth it’s a far more interesting station than one might imagine.

The Past and Future of the Bromley North Branch

25 January, 2013 by

The branch line from Grove Park to Bromley North is only one and a half miles long. It has but two stations (excluding Grove Park itself) and those two are ridiculously close to each other. Traffic by London standards is pretty minimal and indeed there is no service on Sundays. Despite this, the branch attracts attention like no other in London because of the conviction of many people from the Mayor downwards that this is really an under-utilised asset that … Continued

Tanners Hill Flydown – Part 2

3 January, 2013 by

thumnail

In Part 1 of this series we saw how and why the Tanners Hill Flydown came into existence. We also reported on the apparent need to double it in advance of enhanced Thameslink services, and the desire to do the work before major Thameslink construction at London Bridge commenced, during which fewer platforms would be in use at London Bridge. In July 2011 Balfour Beatty was awarded the contract to carry out the work. Work at the site started in … Continued

Tanners Hill Flydown – Part 1

Our original plan was to write a piece on St Johns station. This would conclude with a short section on the work carried out over the Christmas holidays on the Tanners Hill Flydown. Like many plans produced by the London Reconnections Planning Committee this plan fell apart when events overtook us. Over the past few months Unravelled, LR’s “photographer-in-chief,” has been documenting the recent major railway engineering changes happening to the area just to the south of St Johns station, … Continued

Unlocking Herne Hill and the Kent route to the City

9 November, 2012 by

The extensive RUS process has already yielded a long shopping list of potential projects, including some big ticket items such as Crossrail 2. We are more likely, however, to see a package of more modest investments in CP5 (Control Period 5, 2014-2019) which will pave the way for more ambitious projects in CP6. Following the government’s recent High Level Output Statement (HLOS), the “rail industry” will need to prioritise the key problem areas around the London network that need to … Continued

Oyster PAYG Rollout Delayed?

13 May, 2009 by

Travelwatch have released a Press Release indicating that they believe the rollout of Oyster PAYG on national rail is now likely to be delayed until 2010, and expressing their concern: We are dismayed that, yet again, the introduction of Oyster Pay As You Go is to be delayed on national rail services in London, meaning passengers will continue to have to use two separate methods of payment on transport in London. As well as being confusing for passengers, it is … Continued

The Price of ELL Phase 2: Victoria – Bellingham Cancelled

22 April, 2009 by

Travelwatch have released communications between themselves and both TfL and the DfT relating to an apparent agreement reached between the government bodies to abandon plans for the service between Victoria and Bellingham in return for ELLX2 funding contributions. The service, with ELLX Phase 2, originally formed part of the Network Rail Utilisation strategy for replacement services for the South London Line after its 2012 closure. The plan was to replace the current half-hourly London Victoria to London Bridge service – … Continued
