London one of worst EU cities for clean, safe transport (IntelligentTransport)

With only Moscow and Rome behind London, a study has found the English capital to be one of the worst-ranked European cities when it comes to traffic pollution and transport safety…

A recent report, commissioned by Greenpeace and completed by Wuppertal Institute, Germany, has ranked London as the third worst city after analysing road safety, air pollution and transport cost.

  1. I’ll politely say I have reservations about any survey of public transport that puts Rome above Amsterdam or Berlin

  2. Herned: You may have misunderstood the ranking. Rome is rated worst (of the cities surveyed), and is only “above” Amsterdam in the physical sense, as the table is presented “worse-first”.

  3. @Malcolm, Herned

Indeed, the worst-first table order is bad design which leads to incorrect reading of the information on a quick read.

  4. No, I was just referring to the public transport column. Rome was 8th, with Berlin 12th and Amsterdam 13th. I have looked at the report to understand their methodology as well. Cost of a single ticket in relation to food prices, and the percentage of population using it daily are the factors the report uses. Whilst visiting the cities for a few days is not the same as living there, given the choice of which system I would prefer to use it certainly wouldn’t be Rome’s!

  5. Herned: Perfectly valid comment. Sorry that I suggested it may have been erroneous. Instead it was me who picked up the wrong end of the stick through skim-reading.

  6. @ Malcolm: no problem. I agree re the poor format as well as the questionable methodology
