Off Site: London Transport Posters at Christies

7 August, 2012 by

It appears that the LTM are looking to auction off a number of excess posters from their archive, with the funds raised being ringfenced for future acquisitions.

Whilst unfortunately the decorating budget here at LR Towers doesn’t stretch far enough to allow us to take part in the auction itself, the online catalogue is well worth a look. Featuring over 300 posters, its a reminder of some of the events and artwork that have featured on London’s Transport network over the last century and beyond.

Many thanks to Ianvisits for the spot. Ian also recently paid a short visit to the Woolwich Box site for the future Crossrail station, which is worth a look.

Go and see 50 of them in the flesh at Christies 8 King St SW1, nearest tube Green Park. But be warned the free exhibition is only open Mon-Fri 09.00 – 16.30. It closes Friday August 24.

Some fascinating examples from the 20′s and 30′s that I’ve not seen before.

Those selected here are brilliant. Will any of more recent years be worth auctioning? Can any one nominate some?

Wonderful posters! I particularly liked the ‘alphabet’ one. But can anyone tell me morre about why “O is for the Otter at Mansion House Sation”? It sounds like there might be an interesting story behind it.
